If you are planning to see the world-famous Lucha Libre in Bolivia, you probably have one big question: Is it safe? El Alto is a massive, vibrant city located at 4,150 meters (13,615 ft) above sea level. While the wrestling show itself is a family-friendly and joyful event, getting there and navigating the city at night requires some local knowledge.

Here is our honest safety guide to enjoying the show without the stress.

1. The Venue vs. The Surroundings

Inside the coliseums or the “Cholets,” the atmosphere is fantastic. You’ll see local families, kids, and tourists cheering together. It is very safe inside. However, the areas outside (like La Ceja or the busy markets) are extremely crowded. Pickpockets look for distracted tourists, so keep your belongings close and your phone in your pocket while walking outside.

2. Altitude and the Cold (The Real Risks)

The biggest “danger” for most tourists isn’t crime—it’s the altitude and the freezing temperatures. El Alto is significantly colder than La Paz.

  • Pro Tip: Dress in layers. Even if it’s sunny in La Paz, the coliseum will be cold once the sun goes down. If you feel dizzy due to the altitude, let your guide know immediately.

3. Don’t Be a “DIY” Hero at Night

On Sundays, the show ends when it’s already dark. Finding a reliable taxi in a crowded area like the 12 de Octubre Coliseum can be overwhelming if you don’t speak Spanish or know the city.

  • Avoid: Walking long distances to the Teleférico stations alone after 7:00 PM.
  • Better: Have a taxi already called or join a group with pre-arranged transport.

4. Transport is Key

The safest way to experience Cholitas Wrestling is door-to-door transport. Taking the Teleférico (Cable Car) is a beautiful experience during the day, but transferring between lines (Purple to Silver to Blue) with cameras and bags can make you a target. A direct transfer from your hotel in La Paz to the ringside is the gold standard for safety.

5. Respect the Fighters and the Crowd

The show is interactive! You might get sprayed with a bit of water or find yourself in the middle of a “theatrical” fight near your seat. Stay calm, laugh, and enjoy the show. The wrestlers are professionals, and the chaos is part of the fun.
